Fuel in the Fight Against Cancer - Heart Disease

Coenzyme Q10 , known as a healthy heart supplement, is also
demonstrating potent anti-cancer properties. Coenzyme Q10, which is
found in all your cells, provides energy -- especially to the heart
muscle. That is why it has become a vital treatment for heart health in
recent years.

But now a new series of studies are turning up some even more
exciting news. CoQ10 may be able to halt cancer.

Dr. William Campbell Douglass reports research findings and case
histories in his newsletter Second Opinion that show a correlation
between CoQ10 and breast cancer. Low levels of CoQ10 were found in women
with breast cancer. Increased levels were associated with regression
and remission.

Among the studies, Dr. Karl Folkers of the University of Texas, Austin
reports regression of breast cancer, not only at the original site, but
even of cancer that had spread (metastasized) to the liver—usually a
sign of terminal illness. How were these results achieved? With
supplements of CoQ10.

Moreover, unlike conventional treatment, CoQ10 is completely non-toxic
and it stimulates the immune system, rather than depressing it. In
several studies, CoQ10 worked wonders with patients who had chosen to
take chemotherapy, reducing the toxicity of such treatment.

In one study, patients who were given CoQ10 had little or no toxicity,
even though they were given much larger doses of the toxic chemotherapy
agent than were given to the control group. This inverse correlation
is significant.

Dr. Douglass points out that CoQ10 dissolves in fat and that it is
therefore most absorbable in either a special wafer form (to which some
oil has been added) or taken with a tablespoon of olive oil. Burton
Goldberg recommends coconut oil.

Since CoQ10 has many health benefits, a minimum dose of 50mg daily is
appropriate for prevention of degenerative diseases, for improved
energy, and for general health If you have cancer, you will want to
increase that dosage dramatically to 400-600mgs daily. But be sure
to discuss large doses with your doctor.

CoQ10 is naturally manufactured by the body. However, two factors are
significant. First, the amount declines with age. Second, the B vitamins
niacin (B3), folic acid, and pyridoxine (B6) are required for the body
to make this important nutrient. If you are not eating red meat, be sure
that you are taking a good multivitamin and high doses of B complex.

CoQ-10 a miracle in a bottle? By John McKenzie ABCNEWS.com T Y L

E R, Texas, Nov. 24 — A presidential commission on vitamins and
nutritional supplements said today it will create an advisory panel to
help monitor the safety of the pills and powders that 42 percent of
Americans take every day. The latest ABCNEWS poll shows that 74 percent
of people believe that vitamins should be taken regularly. But
opinions are split as to whether vitamins actually do the things they
are said to do. While 45 percent doubt vitamins do what they are
claimed to do, 49 percent think that the advertising for vitamins is
reliable. Only recently, however, has there been scientific research
to test what vitamins can do to improve our health. In some cases, it
turns out the results are remarkable.

Help for a Desperate Heart

Gina Ferguson seemed much too young to be suffering from an enlarged and
weakened heart. She was 24 years old, and she was dying. I couldn't
walk to the bathroom without feeling I had walked a mile, Ferguson said.
"Shortness of breath to the point of gasping. "The cardiologist
they sent me to told me that my life expectancy was very short, perhaps
10 days." Doctors already had put her on a variety of powerful
medications. Finally, running out of ideas, they suggested she try
something very different—a little-known nutritional supplement called
Coenzyme Q-10. Cardiologist Dr. Peter Langsjoen is among hundreds of
researchers who have studied this vitamin-like substance and found the
results encouraging. "It doesn't even compare to anything else," said Langsjoen.
Its effects are so clear. They are not subtle. They are dramatic."

Enzyme Essential for Health

Early research showed that Coenzyme Q-10 is in every cell in the body
and essential for cells to produce energy.

Scientists found that patients with weakened heart muscles had unusually
low levels of Coenzyme Q-10. But several small, controlled studies
found that when patients took supplements, most showed significant
improvement. In one weak heart, the left ventricle was enlarged,
unable to squeeze down properly. But with supplements of Coenzyme
Q-10, that same heart is now smaller, back to its normal size, and able
to pump blood much more thoroughly. The most obvious thing a person
would notice would be improved stamina, vigor," says Langsjoen. And
because levels of Coenzyme Q-10 decline steadily with age, scientists
are taking a preliminary look at how these supplements might affect
other diseases.

Other Benefits Possible

"Other degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's
disease also have defects in energy production, said Professor Lester
Packer at the University of California, Berkeley.

"So Coenzyme Q-10 could be important."

As for Gina Ferguson, within one month of taking Coenzyme Q-10, her
heart was measurably improved. "The end result is that I'm still
here," said Ferguson. "I can still be a mother to my child and I can
still be a wife. Coenzyme Q-10, for me, it's my lifeline."
